How do I get started?
1. Start by chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo for as long as possible, or for at least 5 or 10 minutes every morning and evening depending on your circumstances. Try for consistency. Guilt is not a part of True Buddhism, but really making your best effort certainly is. Whether sitting on a chair or kneeling on the floor, keep your eyes open, your back straight and your palms joined in front of your heart, holding your Juzu beads. Begin to learn how to recite the Sutra book, which is called doing Gongyo. We are happy to assist you in learning it.
2. As soon as you can, ask to receive the Gojukai Ceremony at our temple. As our Chief Priest, Rev. Takikawa explains, this ceremony plants the seed of happiness in your heart. Your consistent practice will allow the seed to grow and blossom. By receiving the Gojukai Ceremony, you become a member of Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism.
3. After receiving the Gojukai Ceremony, when you are reciting at least once through the Sutra Book every morning and evening at your altar, and you are attending local meetings and coming to the temple, you can request to receive your own Gohonzon.
